the line he used with sean hannity ready to use in the debate when he, of course, expected barack obama would attack him in some way, shape, or form on the 47% comment. barack obama never did so, which i continue to find baffling strategically, but mitt romney i think wanted to get it out there in the air before october 16th and the next debate. my guess what he'll do, when barack obama almost assuredly attacks him in the october 16th debate he will say that's old news, i've apologized for it, made a mistake, an interesting way, barack obama allowed mitt romney to frame it the way he wants which is clearly a damaging moment for mitt romney's campaign, he's trying to move beyond it, and i think this is his attempt to do so, though, my guess is barack obama will not let this apology be the last word on it. >> and also get ahead of it before the vice presidential debate because you know joe biden was going to go after it. still inexplicable why the president didn't use it wednesday night. thank you so much, chris. see you later. joining me now to dig deeper into the jobs data, u.s. economi

. you can imagine the obama campaign trying to make sofg a mediocre debate will jump on that notion of new and say he's created a whole new persona than the guy who ran in the primaries. >> rose: norah. >> president obama left his greatest hit on the cutting room floor. there was no mention of bain or no mention of the 47%, no mention of china, no mention of the auto industry saved. there's no mention of the wars ended and the discussion about obamacare. he didn't mention that that would turn back many provisions that protect women's health, free mammograms, contra ceptives. there are a number of greatest hits he uses on the campaign but he didn't mention tonight. the only thing i can think in terms of analyzing what happened, there's been many white house advisors who know behind the scenes how much president obama personally dislikes mitt romney, just has a disrespect in some ways for him. he respected john mccain because peace a war hero but just thinks mitt romney is an empty suit. my sense was that his advisors got to him and said you cannot let that show through in this debat

, it's not good. the one thing that i think obama really did connect towards the end of the debate after romney was sort of saying well, i like parts of wall street reform, just not yours and i'm going to repeal obama care and replace it with something else. without a whole lot of specifics. and on the tax plan, obama said look, this is time and time again here is mitt romney saying he's going to do all these things and he won't tell you what his secret plans are. why is he keeping them a secret? is it because they're so good for the middle class. if they really were great tax plans that weren't going to hit the middle class, he could say how it's not going to hurt the middle class. he could say how he's going to regulate wall street and deal with pre-existing conditions. you're seeing fact checkers today and you'll see the obama campaign hammering things home like the preconditioned issue where romney doesn't have anything dealing with people who have cancer and are uninsurable today. the overall romney campaign is saying well, you know, we'll figure out a way for the states to de

later. it was a robust debate, in the team jerseys, governor rom flee in the reds tie, president obama in the blue. romney landing a number of job jabs on everything from debt and jobs and the economy to health care, to his green energy program, saying, americans, republican and democrat need leadership and he's prepared to provide it. the president, keeping his cool, said to be a challenge for him tonight, saying that leadership requires more than lofty goals trequires specifics and he didn't hear them from the governor. it was interesting to see mitt romney looking mostly over at president obama when he was making his point and president obama choosing to look at jim lehrer or looking down. what message do the viewers pick up on that? president obama looking directly into the camera on the subject of obamacare, wanting to communicate directly to the viewers at home, past the moderator. there was mostly respectful sparring in a robust debate. the moderator, jim lehrers was not nrsly in control, but not ineffective. this is the first time we have seen the candidates go back and forth.
